Volkswagen has announced it will introduce a new “maintenance concept” with the launch of the Golf 8 in Europe, effectively doubling the vehicle’s service interval to two years.

The Wolfsburg-based brand says the concept will be extended to all of its models in Europe over the course of 2020 as part of the launch of new models, facelifts and the beginning of a new model year.

Interestingly, there will be a separate (as-yet-unannounced) maintenance concept for the all-electric ID model family.

So, what about South Africa? Well, it seems likely the local arm of the German brand will stick with the current 12-month service interval, with VW saying “arduous operating conditions such as heat or dust still require annual servicing of vehicles” in many regions outside of Europe.

“The high quality of our vehicles allows us to double the inspection service interval in Europe to 24 months,” said Achim Schaible, head of the after sales & dealer network at the Volkswagen brand.

“We are therefore one of the few volume brands to call our customers into the workshops less frequently. In addition, our new standard inspection service is to replace the previous service. This way, we are considerably simplifying the maintenance programme and making it more transparent for our customers and partners,” he said.
