The product chief for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has hinted that a hotter Mercedes-AMG G63 S is on the cards, while also ruling out a V6-powered G43 derivative.

Speaking to Auto Express, Gunnar Guthenke also revealed that another Mercedes-Maybach G-Class model could be in the offing.

“We have had 6x6, the G500 4×4² and the Landaulet,” Guthenke told the British publication.

“Will there be more to come? Certainly. We have a small team, but all of these cars were developed very quickly. Let’s see what comes,” he said, adding that he was eager to “nurture” the Landaulet "tradition".

Guthenke went on to emphasise that the new platform underpinning the latest-generation G-Class could certainly cope with more oomph.

“Previously, you’d never have had the steering and dynamics for an ‘S’ . I am so excited about future modifications,” he said, before ruling out a V6-powered, G43-badged AMG-lite derivative, explaining that Geländewagen buyers “love the V8”.

Revealed in February 2018, the new G63 drops the previous generation's 5,5-litre V8 in favour of a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 worth 430 kW and 850 N.m. The result is a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,5 seconds, with a top speed of 220 km/h (or 240 km/h with the optional AMG Driver’s package specified).
