Back at the start of October 2018, the new G20-generation BMW 3 Series was revealed in Paris, with the 190 kW 330i positioned as the most powerful petrol variant. Now, however, the Munich-based automaker has released more details about the new M340i derivative ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of November.

Once it launches, this new M340i xDrive will thus assume the role of the most powerful model in the seventh-generation range … until the arrival of the new full-fat M3, that is.

BMW South Africa tells us the M340i is scheduled to be introduced locally from September 2019.

The latest variant is powered by a turbocharged straight six-cylinder petrol engine worth 275 kW and 500 N.m, which represent increases of 35 kW and 50 N.m over the outputs of the outgoing (F30-generation) 340i. An eight-speed Steptronic sports transmission with a launch control function will ship standard.BMW M340iPaired with the brand’s rear-biased xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the newcomer dashes from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,4 seconds. Claimed combined fuel consumption comes in at 7,5 L/100 km.

The standard features list will include M Sport suspension (lowering the ride height by 10 mm), variable sports steering, an M Sport differential, an M Sport braking system (with 348 mm discs fore and 345 mm items aft) and 18-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres (225/45 R18 on the front axle and 255/40 R18 at the rear).

Various model-specific styling features are also included, from the design of the front apron, side sills and rear spoiler to the trapezoidal exhaust trims. Meanwhile, the side-mirror caps, air intake struts, elements of the grille, tailpipe trims and model lettering are all finished in “Cerium Grey” metallic.

Inside, you’ll find sports seats with M-specific upholstery (a combination of Sensatec and Alcantara), anthracite “BMW Individual” roof liner, an M-branded leather-clad steering wheel and interior trim strips in “Aluminium Tetragon”.
