Mercedes-Benz has taken the wraps off the new Mercedes-AMG CLA35 4Matic ahead of its official debut at the New York International Auto Show, revealing the third 35-badged “baby AMG” from Affalterbach.

Like the hatchback and sedan versions, the four-door CLA35 employs a turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine worth 225 kW and 400 N.m, variably distributed to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (and delivering what the automaker describes as an “emotional engine sound”).

That’s enough grunt, says Mercedes-AMG, for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 4,9 seconds (one-tenth slower than the sedan and two-tenths behind the hatchback) and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Mercedes-AMG’s entry-level CLA (a hotter CLA45 will surely follow) features a pair of powerdomes on the bonnet, a twin-louvre grille and a special front apron (complete with “flics” on the air inlets), along with aerodynamically optimised 18-inch alloys (19-inch items will be optionally available), a small spoiler lip and the two tailpipes.

The braking system, meanwhile, has also been uprated, with the front axle gaining four-piston monoblock fixed callipers and 350 mm discs, and the rear axle featuring single-piston sliding callipers and 330 mm discs. The discs are internally ventilated and perforated, while the silver-painted brake callipers boast black “AMG” lettering.

Inside, the CLA35 gains the Stuttgart-based firm’s latest MBUX infotainment system, run through two displays sited under one shared glass cover. There’s also a new flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel, complete with perforated leather in the grip area and red contrasting stitching.
