A fresh report from Germany suggests that a BMW 9 Series will be added to the Munich-based automaker's range by 2020, ostensibly to take the fight to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

AutoBild reports that this new flagship model will run on an elongated version of the current 7 Series platform. The publication furthermore speculates that the body will be inspired Vision Future Luxury concept first unveiled in Beijing in 2014 (and pictured above).

Possible engine options include the 6,6-litre twin-turbo V12 currently doing duty in the M760Li xDrive, although a plug-in hybrid powertrain seems more likely considering the proposed introduction date.

The report adds that passengers sitting in the rear of the BMW limousine (who will enter through rear-hinged doors) will enjoy individual seating and, naturally, ample room to lounge.
