Datsun has taken the wraps off its new Cross, which is reportedly based on the seven-seater GO+, in Indonesia.

Interestingly, the Nissan-backed brand has chosen to drop the “GO” name from the vehicle’s official title, despite the fact that the 2015 concept wore the full “GO Cross” moniker.

Official details are still relatively slim, but we can tell you that the Cross seats seven, and gains the requisite exterior styling cues – from body cladding, faux skid-plates and roof rails with a maximum weight limit of 30 kg – to match it moniker. Early promotional material suggests the Cross has a ground clearance of 200 mm.

A fresh set of 15-inch alloys, along with automatic projector headlamps (incorporating LED daytime running lights) cited above round front foglamps, are also included. A rear roof spoiler is furthermore part of the package.

Inside, the Cross again appears to share much with the GO+, although a 6,75-inch touchscreen system (with Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary and Smartphone connections) has been added. Safety equipment includes stability control, ABS and dual airbags.

The new Datsun Cross measures 3 995 mm long, with a wheelbase of 2 450 mm, mirroring the measurements of the GO+. However, at 1 670 mm wide and 1 560 mm tall, this latest model is both a little wider and a little taller than its MPV cousin.

The Cross employs Datsun’s familiar 1,2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine, sending its 50 kW and 104 N.m to the front wheels. Interestingly, the automaker appears to have added a continuously variable transmission option to the mix, along with the standard five-speed manual gearbox.

No word yet on whether the Datsun Cross is destined for South Africa...
