Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has rolled out specification upgrades to its Ranger line-up, while also adding a new Thunder option to the mix.

We’ve already covered the Wildtrak-based Thunder in detail (including pricing) so we’ll concentrate on the upgrades to other derivatives here.

So, what’s new for the popular, locally built Ranger? Well, all XLT, Wildtrak (including the aforementioned Thunder) and Raptor models have gained LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights and front foglamps as standard.

In XLS models, the Blue Oval brand’s “Connected Touch Radio” system with an eight-inch colour touchscreen replaces the smaller, previously fitted four-inch display (which ran Sync 1).

Ford says this new system is “largely equivalent” to its Sync 3 arrangement, with the “exception of embedded navigation and voice recognition”. It boasts two USB slots plus Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The infotainment system is furthermore offered as a R6 080 option on XL derivatives, as are side steps (for R5 050).

On the Wildtrak, Ford’s list of factory-fitted options has been expanded to include a roller shutter for the load bay (R20 090), along with the new black finish for the 18-inch double-spoke alloy wheels (R520).

As before, all Ranger models ship standard with a four-year/120 000 km warranty and a six-year/90 000 km service plan (with 15 000 km intervals). Pricing starts at R323 400 for the base single-cab 2,2 TDCi model and runs through to R875 700 for the flagship Raptor.
