BMW has confirmed an M235i variant will function as the range-topper in its upcoming 2 Series Gran Coupé range.

Set to take the fight to the Mercedes-Benz CLA after its reveal in November 2019 (and market launch early in 2020), the new four-door 2 Series Gran Coupé will (like the latest 1 Series) be underpinning by BMW’s fresh front-wheel-drive platform.

That, of course, suggests base models will be front-driven, with the M235i gaining the Munich-based firm’s xDrive all-wheel-drive arrangement.

BMW says this “sporty range-topping model” will be fitted with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 225 kW (yes, just like the M135i xDrive), which will see it competing directly with the Mercedes-AMG CLA35. It will furthermore ship standard with a “newly developed” mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential.

The German brand promises the new 2 Series Gran Coupé will feature “elegantly sporty and extrovert lines” as well as “cutting-edge connectivity and generous levels of spaciousness”.
