When Volkswagen revealed the new Tiguan R as part of its facelifted crossover range, it gave away very few performance details. But now that’s changed, with official figures having been released.

With overseas publications such as Autocar now having sampled the high-performance crossover, VW has dropped headline figures.

So, what do we know? Well, the Tiguan R tips the scales at 1 746 kg and draws its urge from the Wolfsburg-based firm’s familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine.

Delivering maximum power of 235 kW at 5 500 r/min and peak torque of 420 N.m from as low as 1 200 all the way through to 5 200 r/min, the four-pot drives all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The result, according to Volkswagen, is a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 4,9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. For the sake of comparison, the 228 kW outgoing Golf 7 R completes the obligatory sprint in a claimed 4,6 seconds.

Earlier in 2020, Volkswagen South Africa told us the facelifted Tiguan was scheduled to launch locally in the first quarter of 2021, with the Tiguan R set to follow “towards the latter part” of next year.
