According to reports, Audi scuppered Volkswagen's attempts to drop the 2,5-litre five-cylinder engine into the Golf R. However, this hasn’t stopped individuals from doing the swap themselves.

As seen in the below video we spotted on CarBuzz, someone squeezed Audi’s five-pot into the bay of a pre-facelift Volkswagen Golf 7 R  ... and fitted a TTE700 turbocharger. The result is pretty impressive.

With the upgraded turbocharger (and no doubt a raft of other updates), the Audi Sport engine's peak power jumps from the stock 294 kW to a whopping 544 kW. The increased torque figure, which is 480 N.m as standard, has not been declared.

As a result, the modded Golf R completes the half-mile run in 16,4 seconds, some two seconds faster than the tweaked RS3 (which suffers from a slow start) it has been pitted against in the video. Over this distance, it’s able to reach a top speed of 261 km/h.
