Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed the next-generation Triton bakkie is scheduled to launch in 2022 as part of the Japanese firm’s leaner mid-term plan.

In announcing its so-called “small but beautiful” mid-term business plan, the company confirmed it would focus its efforts on the ASEAN region, while also saying it had “resolved to freeze the introduction of new models to the European market”. As previously reported, the automaker will stop building the Pajero in 2021, too.

In its presentation, Mitsubishi said the new Triton would arrive in Japan’s 2022 financial year (which technically starts in April), with a new bakkie-based Pajero Sport following in 2023.

In 2020, meanwhile, the company plans to release a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the Eclipse Cross, with the new Outlander (plus an fresh electric car for China) following in 2021. In 2022, the Outlander will get the PHEV treatment.

In addition, the Xpander will be offered in hybrid form from 2023, with an all-new version of the MPV set to follow soon thereafter. Two more unspecified “all-new models” are also on the cards from 2023.

Based on earlier reports, the next-gen Triton will share its underpinnings with the next-gen Nissan Navara, likely featuring some sort of electrification. In November 2019, a Mitsubishi executive suggested the new Triton would be “substantially” larger than the current model and wear a boxier frame.
