Nissan and Italdesign have teamed to create the aptly named Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign prototype, commemorating the 50th anniversaries of both the GT-R and the Italian design and engineering company.

Based on a Nissan GT-R Nismo (but some 94 mm longer at 4 784 mm), the prototype was developed, engineered and built by Italdesign, while its exterior and interior designs were created by teams at Nissan Design Europe in London and Nissan Design America.

The familiar 3,8-litre V6 engine under the bonnet has been tweaked to deliver an “estimated” 530 kW and 780 N.m, thanks to optimised twin high-flow, large-diameter GT3 competition-spec turbochargers and larger intercoolers; heavy-duty crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and bearings; high-flow piston oil jets; revised camshaft profiles; higher-flow fuel injectors; and optimised ignition, intake and exhaust systems.

A reinforced sequential six-speed dual-clutch rear transaxle and stronger differentials and driveshafts direct the power to all four corners. A revised suspension arrangement was also developed, featuring a Bilstein DampTronic continuously adjustable damping system.

For stopping power, the GT-R50 by Italdesign employs Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes, complete with the obligatory red callipers. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, sized 255/35 R21 up front and 285/30 R21 at the rear, are also included.

The vehicle is finished in Liquid Kinetic Grey paint with Energetic Sigma Gold anniversary accents. Up front, the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign features a golden inner element that stretches across the vehicle while the bonnet has a more pronounced power bulge than the standard car. Thin LED headlamps, meanwhile, stretch from the wheel arch to the lip above the outer cooling intakes.

Interestingly, the roofline has been lowered by 54 mm. The rear window line descends longer and deeper than on the standard car, while the GT-R’s signature twin round taillights have been binned in favour of separate “floating” features, each with thin light rings and hollow centres. A large, adjustable rear wing has furthermore been added, while custom 21-inch wheels lend the car yet more stance.

Inside, the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign features two types of carbon-fibre finishes used across its centre console, instrument panel and door linings, along with Alcantara and Italian leather on the seats. You’ll also notice yet more gold accents, while the steering wheel’s central hub and spokes are fashioned from carbon-fibre.

“How often do you get to ask, ‘what if we created a GT-R without limits,’ and then actually get to build it?” said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior vice president for global design.

“This is a rare window in time when two big moments intersect: 50 years of Italdesign shaping the automotive world and 50 years of Nissan generating excitement through our iconic GT-R. So to celebrate this convergence, Nissan and Italdesign created this custom GT-R to mark 50 years of engineering leadership.”

“Although this is not the next-generation GT-R, it is an exciting celebration of two anniversaries in a provocative and creative way – wrapping one of Nissan’s best engineering platforms and Japanese design with Italian coach-building,” said Albaisa.
