The folks over at Automann-TV have published a video giving us a proper idea of how the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI sounds.

Following the YouTube channel’s earlier video showing a 0-100 km/h (and top speed) test, this latest clip concentrates on the fresh-faced hot hatch’s soundtrack.

Take note the vehicle used in the footage employs a six-speed manual (rather than seven-speed dual-clutch) transmission, which won't be offered in South Africa. In addition, since this was filmed in Europe, the exhaust system includes petrol particulate filter that likely saps at least some aural enthusiasm (whether SA-spec versions will feature this filter remains to be seen).

The video includes some in-car footage, clips of the eighth-generation Golf GTI blasting past the camera, some static revving and a few sound bites recorded by a camera affixed alongside the tailpipes.

As a reminder, the new Golf 8 GTI was unveiled (alongside the Golf 8 GTD) at the end of February 2020, sporting fresh styling, extra power and a quicker-shifting DSG transmission.

As before, the GTI draws its urge from a version of VW’s familiar EA888 engine. Here, though, the turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit has been tuned to deliver 180 kW (up from the SA-spec Golf 7 GTI’s peak output of 169 kW) and 370 N.m (some 20 N.m more than the outgoing model).

In May 2020, VW South Africa confirmed the local launch of the new Golf 8 GTI had been pushed back to early 2021.
