The facelifted Kia Sorento has touched down in South Africa, with the revised local range comprising four derivatives (down from six) at launch, priced from R569 995.

Interestingly, the entry-level LS variant has been discontinued, as have the high-spec SX and SXL models. The rejigged Sorento range is thus made up of what Kia Motors South Africa describes as a “mid-spec” LX and a “mid-high-spec” EX derivative, each available in either front- or all-wheel drive.

The 2,2-litre turbodiesel engine remains (the old petrol engine that powered the base model has been axed), still churning out 147 kW at 3 800 r/min and 440 N.m between 1 750 and 2 750 r/min. However, the four-cylinder oil-burner is now mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission (the previous self-shifting gearbox had six forward ratios) with four driving modes: eco, comfort, sport and smart.

The facelift brings a new grille, which is flanked by fresh headlamps (with revised LED daytime running lights on higher specification models), as well as a redesigned bumper. Round back, you’ll find a new bumper, fresh treatment for the taillamps and a revised tailgate. All models now ride on new 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/60 rubber.

Inside, Kia says “numerous upgrades and enhancements” have been made, including the addition of a “more tactile” steering wheel, a new gearshift lever and a revised instrument cluster. The redesign also includes alterations to the air vents and the centre console design. All four derivatives feature seating for seven and leather upholstery as standard.

The LX trim level includes dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, automatic headlamps, auto-folding (and heated) side-mirrors, and rear-sited USB ports. The higher-spec EX furthermore gains illuminated scuff plates, rear blinds, electrically adjustable front seats (with two-way adjustable lumbar support for the driver), integrated roof rails and wireless smartphone charging.

All derivatives feature a new eight-inch colour touchscreen with satellite navigation and Apple CarPlay (plus Android Auto, once released in SA) functionality. An electric parking brake is also standard, along with cruise control, six airbags, rear parking sensors and a reverse camera.

Kia’s five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and five-year/100 000 km service plan are included as standard.
