A digital artist has released renders of the upcoming facelifted Toyota Fortuner, using the latest spy shots as a base.

Nikita Chuyko created the renders for Russian website kolesa.ru, drawing inspiration from the low-resolution spy images that recently hit the internet.

Up front, the artist added a narrower grille (now with a black rather than chrome finish), along with large trapezoidal air intakes in the restyled bumper. The headlamps, meanwhile, are sleeker and gain a fresh lighting signature.

The render also depicts the updated Fortuner with a black roof, while fresh alloy wheel designs should be on the cards, too. Round back, expect revised taillamps (Chuyko’s illustration shows items similar to those employed by the Toyota Highlander) and a new rear bumper.

Of course, we’ve yet to have a look at the seven-seater SUV’s updated cabin. Based on earlier reports, the interior is likely to benefit from an updated touchscreen infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

And under the bonnet? Well, while the engine range is expected to continue largely unaltered (bar perhaps a little more oomph from the 2,8-litre turbodiesel shared with the Hilux), it’s worth noting Toyota South Africa Motors recently confirmed the discontinuation of the 4,0-litre V6 petrol variant as well as all manual models.

The current-generation Fortuner was revealed in 2015 before hitting the market in South Africa at the end of the first quarter of 2016. The strong-selling local range is built at Toyota’s Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal, with other engine options including a naturally aspirated 2,7-litre petrol mill and a 2,4-litre turbodiesel.
