A spokesperson for Toyota in Australia says the Japanese firm knows “there is a market for performance hatches” in the midsize segment as speculation around a full-fat GR Corolla grows.

Speaking to CarsGuide, the unidentified spokesperson said a hot hatch version of the Corolla would “for sure” be introduced “if the business case stacks up”.

“We know that there is a market for performance hatches in that segment; we’d just need to make the numbers stack up,” the spokesperson said. “That is, of course, if such a car [were] to become globally available.”

In March 2020, Toyota filed an application to trademark the “GR Corolla” badge in Australia.

A month earlier, a report out of the United Kingdom claimed the new GR Corolla would use the same turbocharged 1,6-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as the smaller GR Yaris but added it would hit the market only in 2023.
