A senior Volkswagen executive in the United States has confirmed the Arteon will be facelifted later in 2020, with some “cool enhancements” planned for the cabin.

Speaking to Roadshow, Hein Schafer, senior vice-president for product and strategy at VW Group of America, said the Arteon (which made its debut in Geneva in March 2017) was in line for a refresh at the “back end of this year” with a “very nice, new interior” on the cards.

Schafer, a South African who moved into the North American role in November 2018, hinted the updated Arteon would also gain new lighting signatures fore and aft as well as fresh wheels designs.

Interestingly, Schafer suggested VW would increase its marketing spend on the Arteon after fairly slow sales in the United States.

"If you're not spending $90-million to get the car out the door and the marketing on the street, it becomes quite tough," he said.

The facelift is expected to include the reveal of the long-rumoured wagon version of the Arteon, although it's not yet clear which markets will receive the new body style.

In August 2019, VW South Africa confirmed to CARmag.co.za it had removed the TDI variants from its Arteon range due to “low customer interest”. The current line-up thus comprises just the 2,0 TSI 4Motion R-Line derivative, priced at R752 600.
