A report out of Europe claims Volkswagen has given the ninth-generation Passat the green light after initially considering killing off the large sedan.

According to Autocar, a new Passat will be sold from around 2023, alongside the Arteon and the Wolfsburg-based firm’s upcoming all-electric saloon.

“With the Arteon, we already have a style leader in the segment. This leaves the door open for the Passat to become even more space-orientated than today’s model,” a VW insider told the publication.

Autocar claims the B9-generation Passat’s design has “already been completed”, with a renewed focus on practicality. Interestingly, the report suggests the new Passat will share plenty with the Škoda Superb and indeed be built alongside its Czech cousin.

The ninth-gen sedan is expected to ride on an updated version of the ubiquitous MQB platform.

While the Passat left the South African market early in 2019 due to lagging sales (with the Arteon following suit in 2020), it’s worth pointing out the nameplate is still considered the best-selling mid-size vehicle in the world, with more 30 million examples having been produced.
