Audi South Africa has just launched the third-generation Audi S3 3-door. The S3 Sportback will follow in South Africa in November 2013.

The range-topper (for now, until an even more powerful RS3 appears) boasts a 2,0T FSI motor that delivers a constant 380 N.m of torque between 1 800 and 5 500 r/min. Maximum power is rated as 206 kW developed at 5 500 r/min.

Local buyers will be happy to note that you can option an S3 with a manual or S tronic, twin-clutch transmission. Audi claims a sprint time from zero to 100 km/h is completed in 4,8 seconds for the S tronic model (5,2 seconds with the manual transmission), while both transmission variants are electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h. The S tronic is supposed to consume on average just 6,9 litres/100 km (manual: 7,0 litres).

Power is transferred to all corners by Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system. In the S3 it is electronically controlled and uses a hydraulically actuated multi-plate clutch to move power fore and aft. During normal driving, the clutch sends most of the engine’s power to the front wheels. When front-wheel slip is detected the clutch transfers to the rear axle in just a few milliseconds.

The new Audi S3 has xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights while the flat rear lights, into which the adaptive brake light is integrated, are also fitted with light-emitting diodes.

A first in the premium compact class are the optional LED headlights, which previously have only been available in luxury models. The low beams are generated in two free-form reflectors with a total of nine high-performance LED chips. Ten high-performance LEDs in the matt aluminium trim provide the high beams.

The Audi S3 has an S-specific single-frame grille. The frame has an aluminium-look finish, and the insert is matte-platinum grey. A newly designed bumper features aluminium-look double ribs integrated into the lateral air inlets. Aluminium-look exterior mirrors and the pronounced side sills are visible in profile. The rear bumper has a platinum grey diffuser that houses the exhaust system’s four oval tailpipes, which sport chrome tips. A large roof spoiler generates downforce on the rear axle.

Inside, a distinct arch encircles the instrument panel. The instrument dials are grey with white needles. Another S-specific feature can be found on the tachometer, which now includes a boost pressure indicator. The pedals and footrest are made of brushed aluminium. The standard front sport seats offer very good adjustment and support. As an option alcantara leather or fine nappa leather with contrast stitching is available.
