Volkswagen has commenced production of the most powerful version of its Amarok bakkie yet, which boasts a V6 churning out 190 kW (up from the previous high of 165 kW).

The Wolfsburg-based brand has announced that the new high-output model, which makes 190 kW and 580 N.m courtesy of its 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart (and 200 kW on overboost “for short periods”), has started rolling off the line at the main Hannover plant in Germany.

The new engine specification will be offered in Highline and Aventura guises, with 190 kW versions of the Amarok also gaining new “visual elements” such as a black roof liner, fresh 20-inch alloy wheel designs and the availability of a new metallic Peacock Green paintwork.

Permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox will be offered as standard on the Amarok with this new top-spec engine, both on Highline and Aventura derivatives.

In the case of the Aventura, the pillar trim and "other roof elements" are finished in titanium black, a colour repeated on the Nappa leather upholstery in the cabin. The Amarok Aventura furthermore runs on new 20-inch “Talca” wheels finished in dark graphite with a high-gloss surface.

While the first examples of the 190 kW version of the Amarok will be made available in Germany from mid-June, Volkswagen South Africa told us in April that it planned to bring this new high-output V6 to local shores at some point in 2019, although trim levels (and, naturally, pricing) have yet to be confirmed...
