The driver of a Volkswagen Polo Vivo has been arrested after being nabbed speeding at 187 km/h on a section of the N3 in Gauteng.

The 36-year-old male was caught on the N3 northbound between Gillooly’s Interchange and the Linksfield turn-off.

“He claimed he was rushing to the Alexandra cemetery,” Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson William Kgasago said, according to Bedfordview and Edenvale News.

If the vehicle in question was indeed a current-generation Polo Vivo (in standard form), it would have been running right at its top speed, with the 1,6-litre models topping out at 188 km/h (the 1,0TSI GT, meanwhile, can hit 196 km/h, according to VW).

Another four people – one nabbed at 177 km/h on a Honda motorcycle who claimed he was testing the bike after it had been standing for some time – were arrested by the EMPD high-speed unit on the same stretch of road.

“The remainder of the speedsters were arrested in sedans after registering speeds of 178, 166 and 162 km/h,” Kgasago told the publication.

After being charged for reckless and negligent driving, each offender was released on bail of R1 000.
