Mercedes-Benz has announced pricing for its new X-Class range, confirming that the local line-up will comprise six derivatives at launch in May 2018.

Each of the six variants in the range at launch makes use of a 2,3-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The unit in the X220d features a single turbocharger and sends 120 kW and 403 N.m to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, while the bi-turbo version under the bonnet of the X250d is worth 140 kW and 450 N.m.

This second, more powerful version of the four-pot diesel is offered in rear-wheel-drive form with a seven-speed automatic transmission and in 4x4 guise, fitted with a manual gearbox or an optional automatic. The V6-powered model, dubbed the X350d, will arrive locally at a later stage.

So, what sort of money are we looking at here? Well, the line-up – which features the Progressive and Power trim levels (no base Pure models here) – will start at R642 103. At launch, the flagship model will be the X250d 4x4 Power, which comes in at R791 315 in manual and R818 105 in auto, dethroning the Volkswagen Amarok 3,0 V6 TDI 4Motion Extreme (R784 400) as the most expensive double-cab bakkie in South Africa.

Of course, these prices exclude any optional extras and “dealer associated costs”, but will be effective from 1 April 2018 so include the new VAT rate of 15% and the latest CO2 tax values.

The X-Class will come standard with the Stuttgart-based brand’s PremiumDrive full maintenance plan, covering the bakkie for six years or 100 000 km. For what Mercedes-Benz describes as “a minimal cost”, customers can extend the maintenance plan to eight years or 180 000 km.

“The much-anticipated Mercedes-Benz X-Class is well positioned to elevate the South African bakkie segment to the next level. It will do this not only by offering a dynamic design paired with luxurious interior and unparalleled performance, but also by being perfectly priced,” said Nadia Trimmel, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Southern Africa.

“We are confident that no other bakkie can offer customers the level of comfort, technological leadership, functionality, premium quality, performance and reliability that the X-Class possesses,” she added.
