The various engines powering the local BMW 4 Series line-up have come in for some work, gaining more oomph and improved efficiency.

All three body-styles in the 4 Series range – the Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé – benefit from the raft of engine updates.

The flagship six-cylinder mill now makes 240 kW, an increase of 15 kW over the previous engine. Peak torque, meanwhile, stands at 450 N.m.

In the BMW 440i Coupé (which replaces the 435i), this 3,0-litre turbocharged petrol unit is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. Thanks to the increase in output, this model sprints to 100 km/h in 5,0 seconds, an improvement of two-tenths of a second.

Furthermore, the Munich-based automaker says fuel consumption has been slashed by up to 12%, which sees the 440i Coupé sip at a claimed 6,6 L/100 km.

The four-cylinder petrol engines have also been tweaked. With peak outputs raised to 185 kW and 350 N.m, the most powerful of the four-pots is the mill doing duty in the BMW 430i Coupé (which replaces the 428i).

The BMW 420i derivatives, meanwhile, draw their urge from a 135 kW four-cylinder unit with peak twisting force of 290 N.m. The diesel unit in the 420d variants also gains a bit more grunt.
