The new Volvo XC40 is scheduled to launch in South Africa in April, and we have local pricing for the initial models in the Swedish brand?s fresh-faced baby crossover range, as it seeks to take on the likes of the BMW X1 and X2, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q2 and Q3.

Volvo Car South Africa has already confirmed that the XC40 will launch locally initially in D4 diesel and T5 petrol guises only, with the choice of R-Design and Momentum trim levels. Inscription derivatives, meanwhile, are scheduled to arrive ?later in 2018?.

At launch, all models will ship standard with all-wheel drive and automatic transmissions, starting with the D4 Momentum at R595 054 and the T5 Momentum at R605 016. The 2,0-litre turbodiesel in the D4 is worth 140 kW and 400 N.m (read our first drive of the XC40 D4 AWD here), while the petrol engine of the same capacity in the T5 produces 185 kW and 350 N.m.

More engine options, including the D3, the recently revealed T3 (Volvo's first three-cylinder unit) and the familiar T4, are expected to arrive later in the year, along with the option of front-wheel drive and manual transmissions on some variants.
