Hyundai Automotive South Africa has quietly expanded its Grand i10 range with the addition of a new entry-level derivative that serves to drop the starting price of the four-model line-up by some R37 000.

The new Grand i10 1,0 Motion variant is priced at R149 900 and – unlike the three other derivatives in the line-up, which all feature a 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine worth 64 kW and 120 N.m – employs a 1,0-litre three-cylinder unit that is likely closely related to the engine doing duty in some Kia Picanto variants.

Linked to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, this naturally aspirated mill makes 48 kW at 5 500 r/min and 94 N.m at 3 500 r/min. The zero to 100 km/h sprint (well, in this case it's more of an amble) takes a claimed 14,9 seconds, before the entry-level Grand i10 tops out at 155 km/h. Hyundai says the little three-pot will sip at an average of 5,4 L/100 km.

Like the other Motion derivatives in the range, the latest variant runs on 14-inch steel wheels, and features ABS with EBD as well as a pair of airbags. A five-year/150 000 km warranty (along with an additional two-year/50 000 km powertrain warranty) comes standard, although a service plan is not included.
