Jaguar Land Rover has filed a suit against a Chinese automaker for copying the design of one of its products.

According to Reuters, the British automaker is suing Jiangling Motor Corporation (JMC) for blatantly copying the styling of the popular Range Rover Evoque.

The JMC model in question is the Landwind X7.

A Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson told Reuters that a court in Beijing's eastern Chaoyang district had "served Jiangling with newly filed actions surrounding copyright and unfair competition".

Of course, the aping of automotive design is relatively common in China, but global automakers seldom go the legal route, apparently believing they have little hope of winning in Chinese courts.

But if Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover is indeed successful, it could pave the way for other global automakers to follow similar routes.
