The new Volvo XC60 has been officially revealed and, as expected, it bears a strong resemblance to its big brother, the XC90.

The second-generation XC60 employs the same Scalable Product Architecture as the XC90 and S90/V90 twins, and is offered with an array of engine options and safety equipment.

The Swedes will launch the newcomer with a 140 kW D4 turbodiesel engine as well as a more powerful 173 kW D5 version, the latter boasting the brand's PowerPulse technology. Petrol variants will include a 186 kW T5 and a twin-charged T6, producing 235 kW.

A flagship T8 Twin Engine model will use the same petrol-electric hybrid system found in the XC90, pushing out 300 kW and serving up a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5,3 seconds.

New features that form part of the XC60's City Safety system include an oncoming lane mitigation function, which helps to avoid oncoming collisions through the vehicle's steer assist.

Also featured on this model is the new CleanZone four-zone automatic climate control system, which has been designed to remove harmful pollutants as the air enters the cabin.

The new Volvo XC60 has been "preliminarily confirmed" for South African introduction in the second quarter of 2018. Local specifications will be announced closer to launch.
