Volkswagen is preparing to show off a new special edition version of its facelifted Amarok double-cab bakkie – dubbed the Canyon – at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover later this month.

The updated Amarok – which is expected to arrive in South Africa in the second half of 2017 – can now be had with a 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine (although this powertrain has yet to be officially confirmed for local introduction).

We've already seen images of the Amarok Aventura special edition, which is be powered by this 165 kW/550 N.m engine, linked to the brand's eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on this model includes 14-way adjustable front seats, a parking assistance system (including a reversing camera) and a 3D colour display.

The newly revealed special edition Amarok Canyon, meanwhile, will feature a slightly detuned version of the six-cylinder oil-burner, putting out 150 kW and 500 N.m. This lower output model is based on the Comfortline equipment level, and features all-wheel drive and 17-inch "Aragua" alloy wheels.

The Canyon also boasts plenty of matte black exterior detailing, applied to items such as the sports bar, door handles, B-pillars and wheel arches. Darkened taillights also serve to set this model apart from its lesser siblings.

Will these special edition bakkies make their way to local shores? Well, we'll have to wait until next year to find out...
