New vehicle sales in South Africa are under serious pressure at the moment, with total volumes falling some 10,3% to 42 907 units in May 2016 (year-on-year).

So, it's interesting to see what's happening in terms of individual model sales. We've taken a closer look at the figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), and picked out the ten best-selling passenger vehicles for the month.

One must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance.

In May 2016, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo predictably retained its place at the top of the table, with the regular Polo again grabbing second.

But third place belonged to the new Toyota Fortuner, which blasted up the table in its first full month on sale.

The Ford EcoSport, meanwhile held onto fourth place, which meant Toyota's combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) was forced down to fifth.

The Toyota Etios, meanwhile, had to settle for sixth place, while its rival Renault Sandero rocketed back into the top ten to snaffle seventh. The Ford Fiesta held steady in eighth, as did the BMW 3 Series in ninth. The Volkswagen Golf, meanwhile, returned to close out the table.

Other interesting snippets of information include the fact that Opel moved exactly 100 units of its new Astra, while Ford weighed in with 383 units of its Focus.

Honda's best-seller proved to be the updated Brio (141), while the new Jaguar F-Pace made its first appearance in the release, with 22 units listed.

Mazda's top performer was the CX-5 (346), while 310 Datsun Go models left showroom floors in May. The new Renault Kadjar, meanwhile, had a fairly slow start, with just 35 units sold.

Now available with five doors, the Volkswagen Up (208) outsold the Toyota Aygo (155), while the Toyota RAV4 (323) beat the Ford Kuga (181).
