Not too long ago, the new Porsche Panamera Turbo lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes 38 seconds, making it the fastest production sedan around the famous track.

But now Alfa Romeo has reclaimed the record, with the Giulia Quadrifoglio blasting around the Nordschleife in just 7 minutes 32 seconds.

We say "reclaimed", of course, because an example equipped with a manual gearbox earlier completed the lap in 7 minutes 39 seconds, before Porsche swooped in to grab the record by a single second. But the Giulia Quadrifoglio that set the latest fastest time was was fitted with the optional, eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, apparently giving it a significant edge.

Who was the man behind the wheel? None other than Alfa Romeo test driver Fabio France, who appeared to use all 380 kW and 600 N.m at his disposal from the 2,9-litre, twin-turbo V6 engine mill powering the sedan.
