Will there be an AMG version of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz X-Class double-cab bakkie? It's a question that has seemingly been asked over and over since the Stuttgart-based brand revealed the Concept X-Class earlier this week.

And – for the time being, anyway – the answer is a firm "no".

"There is no AMG … now every round table is asking this question," Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Daimler chairman and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, told CarAdvice.

"Obviously not – there is no plan. But you never know. We'll see how the market goes, and how this product will be received in the marketplace," he added.

So, with no AMG X 63 variant sporting a 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 coming out of Affalterbach, which engines will make up the range?

Well, we already know that the flagship derivative will employ Mercedes-Benz's turbo-diesel V6 engine, linked to permanent all-wheel drive (although outputs have yet to be confirmed).

But, according to CarAdvice, the other powertrains expected to be offered include a four-cylinder turbo-diesel (likely a version of Renault-Nissan's 2,3-litre twin-turbo engine, which is already used in the Navara) and some form of four-cylinder petrol mill.

"We have the V6, two four-cylinder engines – diesel and gasoline – and then we have 4x4 and we have 4x2. That is it as, far as powertrains are concerned," Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, told the Australian publication.

"And then we have manual and two different automatics going with the different engines," he added.
