A German automotive magazine has taken the new Mercedes-AMG A45 S 4Matic+ round the Nürburgring Nordschleife, setting a blistering lap time in the process.

With sport auto's test driver Christian Gebhardt at the wheel and Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres wrapped round the wheels, the all-paw hot hatch managed a time of 7 minutes 48,80 seconds, which just about matches the E92-generation BMW M3 GTS Coupé’s time set in 2011 and the 997.1-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS’s effort in 2007.

For reference, the BMW M2 Competition took 7 minutes 52,36 seconds to complete a lap of the Green Hell in 2018, while the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S took 7 minutes 49,21 seconds in 2016 (later improved to 7 minutes 47,19 seconds).

As a reminder, the A45 S employs a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine offering a whopping 310 kW and 500 N.m to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. That’s enough, says the Affalterbach-based performance division, for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 3,9 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h.
