First came the 5 Series. Then followed a coupe version known as the 6 Series. But then BMW decided to launch a four-door version of the 6 Series and called it the Gran Coupe, which is essentially a four door version of the two door version of a four door car. It makes sense, doesn't it?

Well, the tactic to provide a car for every possible buying taste has seemingly worked well and BMW has reportedly filed patents for a 4 Series Gran Coupe, which is (you guessed it) a four-door version of the two-door 4 Series, which in turn is a... oh, never mind.

The new model patents were filed in Germany recently and the website www.autofans.be has rendered this image of the new model. This confirms an earlier story of a slightly larger 4 Series which was spotted testing in close to production trim.

Power can be expected from the same engines that power the 4 Series range: the fantastic six-cylinder, 3,0-litre turbopetrol that develops 225 kW and the 2,0-litre turbopetrol in two states of tune (135 kW and 180 kW). We wouldn't bet against an M4 Gran Coupe either.

If the speed at which BMW seems to roll out new models is any indication, we can expect the 4 Series Gran Coupe to appear some time during 2014.
