The chief engineer for the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class says the W223-generation saloon will boast a turning circle “better than that of the A-Class”.

Chief engineer Jürgen Weissinger told Autocar a new rear-axle steering package would render the upcoming S-Class as manoeuvrable as a compact car.

“It’s a whole new world. The turning circle is better than that of the A-Class. It really is a game-changer,” he said, according to the British publication.

Weissinger furthermore suggested Stuttgart’s new flagship luxury sedan would benefit from a raft of other small but important updates.

“When you develop a car that has traditionally been described as the best car in the world, you have to work on every small detail. There are improvements in every area of its design.”

In its press material, Mercedes-Benz says the fresh-faced S-Class will be offered with a rear-axle steering angle up to ten degrees, “allowing impressive manoeuvrability and agility in urban areas”.

In fact, the company claims the turning circle of the S-Class has reduced by up to two metres, thanks to this optional system (that gives the long-wheelbase S-Class a turning circle of less than 11 metres) and a “more direct” front-axle steering ratio.

Buyers will have a choice of two rear-axle steering packages; one with a rear steering angle of up to ten degrees and one with an angle up to 4,5 degrees.

The new S-Class is scheduled to be fully revealed in September 2020.
