Hennessey Performance has finally announced that it has commenced production of the frankly bonkers VelociRaptor 6x6, with just 50 units set to be built for 2018.

Interestingly, the Texas-based company says it may build another 50 examples for global markets should demand be high enough.

The price? Well, the firm has announced a starting price of $349 000 (about R4,5-million ... and a little higher than first expected), which includes the base Ford Raptor bakkie.

Hennessey then adds the locking rear axles, upgraded Fox suspension, upgraded 20-inch alloys (with off-road rubber), special front and rear bumpers, a roll-bar and LED lighting.

Under the bonnet, the 3,5-litre twin-turbo V6 comes in for some work, too, gaining upgraded turbochargers, stainless steel exhaust modifications, upgraded front-mounted air-to-air intercooler and plumbing, and a re-tuned ECU. The result? Some 450 kW and more than 840 N.m, which apparently results in a 0-100 km/h time of around 5,0 seconds.

Other optional upgrades offered by Hennessey include Brembo brakes, even larger wheels, a bespoke interior and even “armouring systems”.
