Mercedes-Benz South Africa has revealed local pricing for its new Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S, which is set to take on the BMW X5 M Competition.

Towards the start of August, the GLE63 S Coupé appeared on the Stuttgart-based firm’s local website (complete with pricing). And now the standard body style has followed suit.

So, how much are you looking at for the fresh-faced GLE63 S? Well, local pricing starts at R2 801 440. For the record, the X5 M Competition kicks off at R2 632 258.

As a reminder, Affalterbach’s twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine here offers 450 kW and 850 N.m to all four wheels. However, the German company has also electrified the powerplant in this application.

Indeed, the starter motor and alternator have been combined into a single electric motor squeezed between the engine and the nine-speed automatic transmission, “temporarily” offering an additional 16 kW and 250 N.m. The result is a blast from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 280 km/h.

In South Africa, the list of standard features includes items such as 21-inch alloys, Nappa leather interior, air suspension with adaptive damping, a 360-degree camera system, the MBUX multimedia arrangement (with extended functions), a panoramic sliding sunroof, a Burmester surround sound system and the AMG Driver's package.

Options, meanwhile, include various wheel designs, upgraded leather upholstery, the AMG Night package (R17 100), an AMG carbon-fibre engine cover (R15 500), climatised front seats (R21 900, although heated front seats are standard), the MBUX rear-seat entertainment system (R48 500), a head-up display (R18 900) and an AMG performance exhaust system (R21 600).
