Toyota has released a new teaser for its upcoming GR Yaris while also confirming the hot hatch will be fully revealed on 10 January 2020 at Tokyo Auto Salon.

But before its official unveiling, a camouflaged version will make its dynamic debut at the Japan Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival 2019 on 15 December. A prototype of the Japanese firm’s new hot hatch was due to be revealed at Rally Australia in November, but the unveiling was pushed back after the event was scrapped due to wildfires Down Under.

A longer version of an earlier (24-second) teaser video has now been published on YouTube, again with “Master Driver” Morizo (that’s Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda to you and me) saying a few words. While the first clip showed the GR Yaris launching off the line, with both its front and rear wheels sending gravel flying (implying we’re looking at an all-wheel-drive hot hatch), this longer video depicts it carving up the surface. It also provides us with a better example of the newcomer’s cheeky exhaust note.

Toyota claims the new GR Yaris will incorporate “all the technologies, knowledge and experience” learned from the company’s return to the FIA World Rally Championship. While technical details have yet to be confirmed, an earlier report out of Japan suggested the GR Yaris would ship standard in all-paw guise, with power coming from a turbocharged 1,5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.
