Fresh footage of the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI has emerged online, giving us our first real chance to hear the new version of the hot hatch in action.

Uploaded to YouTube by user crospotter13, the video starts by taking a closer look at the visual details of the eighth-generation GTI, including an extensive overview of the cabin.

At the 02:22-mark, however, the clip switches to footage of the Golf GTI on the road during a promotional shoot in Cape Town. And it’s here we get an idea of the newcomer’s engine and exhaust note.

Although the driver isn’t exactly gunning it in the clip, the exhaust note sounds decidedly muted, with no evidence of GTI’s trademark upshift sound nor any pops and crackles from the tailpipes. A victim of the WLTP regulation requiring the use of a petrol particulate filter, perhaps?
