Opel South Africa has announced pricing for its new Grandland X, which slots in above the Mokka X at the top of the German brand’s crossover line-up to take on the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson.

At launch, the local range comprises three derivatives, each drawing its urge from a turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine (yes, the one from the Peugeot 3008 with which the latest Opel crossover shares its EMP2 underpinnings) sending 121 kW and 240 N.m to the front wheels. Furthermore, each variant employs a six-speed automatic transmission as standard.

Pricing starts at R429 000 for the base version of the Grandland X, while the Enjoy derivative costs R36 000 more at R465 000. The flagship Cosmo version, meanwhile, is priced at R565 000, commanding a R100 000 premium over the mid-spec model.

The Grandland X measures 4 477 mm long, 1 844 mm wide and 1 636 mm high. With a wheelbase of 2 675 mm, the automaker says the newcomer features “plenty of space” for passengers, with the luggage compartment offering “generous room for luggage and sport equipment”.

In March 2018, the PSA Group announced that it had signed a joint-venture agreement with the Namibian government to create an assembly plant in Walvis Bay, with the Grandland X and 3008 set to be the first models assembled at the new factory. And it’s from this plant that SA is expected to source its units.
