According to Naamsa, June’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 46 678 units, representing an increase of 3,0%, year on year. Here’s what happened in the sixth month of the year in terms of passenger cars...

As always, it’s interesting to take a look at what’s happening in terms of individual model sales. We’ve already examined the figures and picked out the 10 best-selling bakkies for the month, and now it’s time to do the same with the passenger vehicle market (be sure to catch our list of the 12 worst-selling passenger vehicles, too).

Interestingly, BMW not too long ago opted to resume the release of its individual model sales figures, while certain other automakers – most notably German rival Mercedes-Benz – still disclose only aggregate sales statistics. Kia and Hyundai also thankfully started releasing their individual model sales figures a few months ago, which makes the picture a little clearer.

So, what happened in June 2018? Well, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo returned to the top spot, pushing the regular Polo down one to second. Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales) retained third, again just ahead of the Fortuner, which held steady in fourth.

The Renault Kwid enjoyed one of its very best months on record (hitting four figures), climbing three places to fifth. The Toyota Etios held steady in sixth, while the Renault Sandero returned to the table to grab a strong seventh.

The Hyundai Grand i10 dropped three places to eighth, while the Toyota Yaris rocketed back onto the charts to claim ninth. The Kia Picanto fell three places to the final spot, with the Toyota RAV4 (753) and Hyundai Creta (597) dropping off the table.

Other bits and bobs

What else caught our eye in June 2018? Well, BMW’s heavy lifters were again the 3 Series (530) and locally built X3 (293), while the Everest (440) rather unusually proved to be Ford’s best performer for the month. The new Fiesta managed 346 units, while the EcoSport added 221 and the Figo 111.

Honda managed to register 130 examples of its CR-V, while Hyundai added 579 units of its i20 and 189 units of its Tucson. And the Isuzu MU-X? Well, as many as 208 examples were registered in the month, seeing the new-to-SA model positively trounce the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (34).

The Jaguar E-Pace (79) outsold the BMW X2 (69), but the Volvo XC40 beat them both with 101 units registered. Kia sold 315 units of its Rio, while Mazda’s top performer was the CX-5 (427).

Nissan’s biggest seller in June 2018 was the X-Trail (508), although the Datsun Go (466) and Almera (358) also contributed gamely to the Japanese automaker's cause. And the new Nissan Micra? Well, the brand registered 308 examples for the month, along with 181 units of its Micra Active.

Opel managed a total of 186 units (with the Corsa leading the way on 66), while Peugeot fell four units short of three figures (the 3008 was again its best-seller, on 42). Meanwhile, Suzuki sold 303 units of its new Swift and 43 of its new DZire to total 864 units in the passenger vehicle market.

Outside of the top ten, Toyota’s Avanza (413) and C-HR (161) featured, as did Volkswagen’s Tiguan (518) and Golf (390). While the A3 (231) was again Audi’s top performer, the Q5 (101) also hit three figures. Volvo’s new XC60 managed 83 units for the month.
