The sales figures for June 2018 are in … and a massive 1 323 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.

According to Naamsa, June’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 46 678 units, representing an increase of 3,0%, year on year. The light commercial segment, meanwhile, declined 0,4% to 14 261 units for the month (also, check out the 10 best-selling passenger cars and the 12 worst-selling, too).

So, exactly what happened in terms of bakkie sales in June 2018? Well, the Toyota Hilux stayed in first place (after beating the Ford Ranger by 519 units in May 2018), with the Ranger again having to settle for second. By our maths, that puts the Hilux (which likely received a boost thanks to the recent launch of the latest Dakar edition) a whopping 4 763 units ahead of the Ranger halfway through the year.

In June, the Nissan NP200 held onto third, while the Isuzu KB likewise remained in fourth. The Nissan NP300/Hardbody (we’re now combining these figures) held steady in fifth, while the Volkswagen Amarok remained in sixth.

The Mahindra Pik-Up moved up one place to seventh and the GWM Steed one spot to eighth, forcing the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up down two to ninth. The Nissan Navara again had to settle for the final spot on the list.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (73), Mazda BT-50 (50), Mitsubishi Triton (37) or Fiat Fullback (12) in June.

Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month, though we do know that the Stuttgart-based brand registered a total of 76 units (up from the previous month’s 33) in the light commercial segment (which includes vans).
