The sales figures for July 2018 are in … and some 874 units separate the top two vehicles as the battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.

According to Naamsa, July’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 47 881 units, representing an increase of 2,6%, year on year. The light commercial segment, meanwhile, declined 2,3% to 13 458 units for the month (be sure to check out our lists of the best- and worst-selling passenger vehicles, too).

So, exactly what happened in terms of bakkie sales in July 2018? Well, the Toyota Hilux remained on top, with the Ford Ranger having to settle for second place yet again. By our maths, that puts the Hilux a whopping 5 637 units ahead of the Ranger in the year-to-date race.

In July, the Nissan NP200 stayed in third spot, while the Nissan NP300/Hardbody (we’re now combining these figures) moved up one to snaffle fourth, forcing the Isuzu KB to the unfamiliar position of fifth. The Volkswagen Amarok, meanwhile, held steady in sixth.

Toyota's Land Cruiser Pick-up climbed two spots to seventh, pushing the Mahindra Pik-Up down one to eighth. The GWM Steed likewise dropped a spot (to ninth), while the Nissan Navara again grabbed the final place on the list.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (88), Mitsubishi Triton (38), Mazda BT-50 (31) or Fiat Fullback (19) in July.

Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month, though we do know that the Stuttgart-based brand registered a total of 70 units in the light commercial segment (which includes vans).
