Toyota has already confirmed that the new Supra will draw its urge from an inline six-cylinder engine (and hinted at its torque output). But a fresh report out of the United States, citing documents from German parts maker ZF Friedrichshafen, suggests that a four-cylinder petrol engine will also be offered.

Since the new Supra was developed alongside the upcoming BMW Z4, it’s long been suspected that the straight-six set to be used by both will come from the Munich-based brand’s stable. And a new transmission document discovered by Road & Track confirms this, listing the Supra as being powered by BMW's single-turbo 3,0-litre B58B30 engine, in this case worth 250 kW.

It also lists an entry-level version of the Supra, which employs the German automaker’s turbocharged 2,0-litre B48B20 four-cylinder engine, sending 195 kW to the rear wheels. Furthermore, Road & Track says Testsuya Tada, the chief engineer for the Supra project, confirmed the plan for a four-pot model during a chat at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The document also reveals that both versions of the Supra (as well as the new Z4) will make use of an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

Interestingly, though, it seems the 3,0-litre version of Z4 (which is expected to wear the M40i badge) will be offered both with the standard 250 kW figure as well as with a slightly higher output, at 280 kW. Four-cylinder Z4 derivatives, meanwhile, will come in 135 kW, 180 kW and 195 kW flavours, according to the document.
