News from Down Under suggests that the range-topping, V6-equipped version of the facelifted Volkswagen Amarok will feature even more oomph than initially thought – for brief periods, anyway – thanks to an overboost function.

According to motoring.com.au, the flagship derivative – which will employ a 3,0-litre V6 turbo-diesel – in the facelifted line-up will be able to sprint from standstill to three figures in 7,9 seconds.

The overboost function bumps peak power from 165 kW to 180 kW and maximum torque from 550 N.m to 580 N.m (as an aside, a slightly detuned version of the six-cylinder oil-burner, putting out 150 kW and 500 N.m, is also expected to be on offer).

Volkswagen Australia says the overboost will be accessible for 10 seconds from 70% throttle, in third and fourth gear from 50 km/h. After a five-second break, the function will again become accessible.

VW Australia's commercial vehicles director earlier lashed out at the recently revealed Mercedes-Benz Concept X-Class bakkie, calling it an "over-hyped concept".

The facelifted Amarok is scheduled to arrive in South Africa next year. It's not yet clear whether the V6 models destined for our shores will feature the overboost function.
