Mercedes-Benz officials have confirmed that the upcoming X-Class bakkie range will not feature any single-cab derivatives, and will thus comprise entirely double-cab models.

"We will only offer a double-cab version of the pick-up," Dr Klaus Benzinger, head of product development for the X-Class, told CarAdvice.

Well, that's that then, right? Well, sort of. You see, Mercedes-Benz Vans chief Volker Mornhinweg made sure not to rule out the possibility of adding a workhorse variant at a later date, after confirming that one is not currently in the works.

"No, so far not – because the single-cab is a pure workhorse. And I wouldn't say 'no' forever, but at the current point of view we won't step in there," he revealed.

He went on to explain the thinking behind the move.

"The point is that in the past, the pick-up trucks were really just a workhorse – just for work, or for businesses – really rough and tough off-road, but what we saw from our research there is a kind of change or move in the direction for a modern, lifestyle, private-use product," Mornhinweg told the Australian publication.

"There's a lot of possible customers we talked with in our car clinics that we had done some years ago, and we saw that kind of change. That also opened up for us the opportunity to step in now… We not only would just like to step into the pick-up segment, we would like to expand it into that more modern lifestyle direction," he added.

Mercedes-Benz earlier confirmed that a high-performance AMG derivative was also unlikely.
