New vehicle sales in South Africa are under increased pressure, with total volumes falling some 17,0% to 44 883 units in July 2016 (year-on-year).

So, it's interesting to see what's happening in terms of individual model sales. We've taken a closer look at the figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), and picked out the ten best-selling passenger vehicles for the month.

One must bear in mind that certain importers – such as Hyundai and Kia – do not submit individual model sales figures, instead only disclosing aggregate sales stats. Mercedes-Benz, too, has taken a similar stance.

Unsurprisingly, in July 2016, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo remained at the summit of the table. But, rather interestingly, the Ford Fiesta beat the regular Polo for second place this time, selling a whopping 1 740 units (an increase of a more than 1 000 units over its June performance).

This saw the Toyota Fortuner fall one place to fourth, ahead of Toyota's combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (the brand reports an overall figure rather than individual model sales), which likewise dropped one spot to fifth.

The Toyota Etios, meanwhile, claimed sixth, while the Ford EcoSport held steady in seventh. The Renault Sandero returned to the table to claim eighth, while the Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Golf each also made a comeback, snaffling ninth and tenth respectively.

The BMW 3 Series (363), Chevrolet Spark (132) and Renault Clio (244) thus all fell out of the top ten.

Other interesting snippets from this month include the fact that Jaguar sold 97 units of its new F-Pace, Ford moved 64 Mustangs, Audi sold 10 R8 units, and Ferrari found seven buyers for its 488 GTB.

Renault, meanwhile, sold 46 units of its new Kadjar, compared to the 223 managed by its Nissan Qashqai sister vehicle.
