Yes, Volkswagen already holds the Nürburgring Nordschleife record within the hot hatch segment, after the Golf GTI Clubsport S claimed a time of 7 min 49,21 sec earlier this year. Not only was it enough to dethrone the previous record holder, the Honda Civic Type R, but this was even faster than the BMW M4.

Volkswagen engineers, however, were seemingly not happy with this result as they returned to the 'Ring with the Clubsport S in an attempt to shave that time down even more...

The reason for the reattempt was because of the weather conditions. With it being 8°C at the time of the lap, Volkswagen claimed that both the engine and tyres would be running at an optimal performance.

An end result of 7 min 47,19 sec would prove that the reattempt was well thought-out as the extra two seconds now make it faster than the 997 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and E92 BMW M3 GTS.

For those wanting to buy one of the limited 400 Clubsport S models, you may be too late as they have already been sold out, with just a handful of them coming to South Africa.
