Mercedes-Benz has revealed the three bakkies against which it has benchmarked its upcoming X-Class double-cab pick-up.

The X-Class, which was previewed by a pair of concepts last month, will be based on the latest-generation Nissan Navara, which will also provide its platform to the upcoming Renault Alaskan.

But, according to motoring.com.au, the Stuttgart-based brand says the Volkswagen Amarok provided the "first indication" that there was a market for a lifestyle bakkie.

"We saw the first move with a product which is more car-like," said Volker Mornhinweg, the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, referring to the Amarok.

"Then the Ford Ranger went even further in that direction and for sure, we benchmarked these products," he revealed to the Australian publication.

"We also looked at the Toyota Hilux, the market leader in that segment. We are sure with our approach we will be quite successful in the future against these competitors," Mornhinweg stated.

Interestingly, the X-Class has already received plenty of attention from a pair of Volkswagen Australia executives, with one claiming that the upcoming Mercedes is little more than an "over-hyped concept" and "badge engineering exercise".
